Gary Smejkal
NOW AVAILABLE FROM CD BABY AND LINDA'S SPORTS BAR...
LIKE A MOTH TO THE FLAME, the solo debut EP from Gary Smejkal, features three new original compositions written for the bass. In further exploring the bass as a lead instrument, Smejkal contrasts driving hard rock rhythms with unexpected interludes and fusionist stylings.
The new band Carbon Based Life Forms founded by Gary Smejkal and Rampage Trio drummer Kevin Crowley in 2007 brings into the studio an impressive roster of musicians including Rob Austin on guitar, Kevin Federico on piano and keyboards, and Christa Centola on vocals.
The new CD has been called “Fluid, expansive and filled with flurries of bass notes” in Metronome Magazine. Christa Centola’s spoken French on the title track combined with Kevin Federico’s haunting counter melodies have been described as "Ethereal, jazzy and sexy" in recent review. Rob Austin’s performance is reminiscent of early Al Dimeola. Smejkal has been featured in Bass Player Magazine, and the new CD has received acclaim in the Boston area Metronome, HIPPO, and Encore music magazines. WSCA 106.1 FM called him “Truly an amazing musician.”
Smejkal regroups in the studio with Federico, Crowley, and Centola to work his first full length CD titled SECOND BASS with special guests to be announced. The first single from the new album, PERSIA, is scheduled to be released in Fall 2008.
“Keep on doing it.”
--- Victor Wooten (Bela Fleck and the Flecktones)
“An A for approval and a C for the chops, which you do have.”
--- Bootsy Collins (James Brown, Funkadelics, Parliament)
